Let me tell you about my adventure in Galle, a city on the southern coast of Sri Lanka that’s brimming with history and charm. We started our journey by wandering through the cobbled streets of Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The fort, built by the Portuguese and later fortified by the Dutch, is an architectural marvel with its colonial buildings, ancient ramparts, and panoramic sea views.
Our first stop was the iconic Galle Lighthouse, standing tall against the azure sky. The views from here were simply breathtaking, with the Indian Ocean stretching endlessly. As we strolled along the fort’s walls, we passed by the old Dutch Reformed Church and the Galle Maritime Museum, each narrating tales of a bygone era.
The streets of Galle Fort are lined with quaint cafes, boutique shops, and art galleries. We indulged in some local delicacies at a cozy café, savoring the flavors of Sri Lankan cuisine. The vibrant street life, with friendly locals and curious tourists, added to the fort’s lively atmosphere.
Beyond the Fort
Then we had the amazing opportunity to visit a nearby Turtle Hatchery. Here, we watched these magnificent sea turtles up close and learned about the ongoing conservation efforts to protect them. The highlight was seeing baby turtles making their way to the sea, a truly heartwarming and unforgettable experience.
Next, we explored the outer areas of Galle. The bustling fish market was a sensory delight, showcasing the region’s rich marine bounty. Just outside the fort, we visited the serene Japanese Peace Pagoda, offering a peaceful retreat with stunning views of the coast.
One of the highlights was a visit to Unawatuna Beach , just a short drive from Galle. This picturesque beach, with its golden sands and turquoise waters, was perfect for a relaxing afternoon. We even tried some snorkeling, marveling at the colorful marine life.
